Introducing GF's Brushable White Enamel

Introducing GF's Brushable White Enamel

roy 06/03/2019 0
PR: Euro Finishes launch General Finishes new Brushable White Enamel, a solution, to applying white paint onto furniture and cabinets General Finishes are introducing a brushable bright white paint that uses a new polymer system and formula that allows a finish similar to their popular spray applied Enduro White Poly. Tom Monahan from General Finishes explained “White Poly and Brushable White Enamel have similar durability, but different polymer systems. The ingredients that make Brushable White Enamel brushable, cause it to dry slower than White Poly so allowing longer to work with the paint.” Brushable White Enamel is designed for those who require a professional non-yellowing finish without the need for spray equipment. Nor does it require a separate top coat.Brushable White Enamel can be applied to raw wood or existing finishes. When applying over an existing finish or over woods with high tannin content, the surface should be prepped properly. The use of General Finishes Stain Blocker is recommended on both raw wood and existing finishes to prevent tannins or stain bleed-through. ---End--- Notes to editors: Samples of Brushable White Enamel are available from Euro Finishes.   FAQ: What shade of white is Brushable White Enamel?A bright white, similar in colour to our Snow White Milk Paint and Enduro White Poly. How does Brushable White Enamel compare to Enduro White Poly?White Poly and Brushable White Enamel have similar durability, but different polymer systems. The ingredients that make Brushable White Enamel "brushable" cause it to dry slower than White Poly, making it impractical for professional cabinet refinishers who require fast dry stacking ability. Brushable White Enamel is designed for those who want a professional non-yellowing finish but don't have the spray equipment to do so. Can Brushable White Poly be used over an existing finish?Brushable White Enamel can be applied to raw wood or existing finishes. When applying over an existing finish or over woods with high tannin content, be sure to prep your surface properly.  The use of GF’s Stain Blocker is recommended on both raw wood and existing finishes to prevent tannins or stain bleed-through Can I use an additional topcoat over Brushable White Enamel for added durability? No, we do not recommend top-coating Brushable White Enamel. Can Brushable White Enamel be tinted?Yes, Brushable White Enamel can only be tinted to a light neutral or pastel shade with a zero VOC UTC colourant. A different product, our clear base would be required when tinting to a mid-range or darker colour....

How long does GF Paint last?

How long does GF Paint last?

roy 27/02/2019 0
Q: How long does GF Paint last when the can is in good condition, unopened and stored in correct temperatures? A: Water-based products will last 3-5 years when stored in ideal conditions. Avoid temperatures below 10°C or above 26°C. Keep from freezing. Note, a can of paint that is 3 years old will not look like a can of paint that is 6 months to 1 year old. You will see stratification/separation which is normal. Products should be stirred thoroughly before using. Note, at Euro Finishes, we recommend stirring rather than using a shaker. Q) What are clear signs that your product is no longer in good condition?A: A foul smell indicates contamination of the product. Failure to re-solubilise large, chunky lumps when stirring indicates the product has frozen and can no longer be used....

Clear Coating over Whites - Important Information

General Finishes does not recommend using a clear top coat over Snow White Milk Paint or Chalk White Chalk Style Paint.Pure white colours may yellow under water or oil top coats, this degree of colour change is usually deemed unacceptable. If you are spraying we recommend using Enduro White Poly or if brushing use GF's Brushable White Enamel. As always, it is the responsibility of the end user to test and ensure the colour meets their satisfaction....

Do you sell Java Gel Stain in Europe?

roy 11/10/2017 1
We do not import Gel Stain, which is a solvent based product to the UK or Europe due to its Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) level. We now only import and distribute water based products which offer excellent performance and benefits in ease of use. The General Finishes new formula Water Based Wood Stain is a good alternative to consider and while not identical, the new formula has many of the characteristics of the Gel Stain. Note Gel Stain is still available in many parts of the USA and in other markets.  ...

How to Spray Water Based Finishes

How to Spray Water Based Finishes

roy 30/06/2017 0
General Finishes water based products can be sprayed through compressed air, HVLP, airless or C.A.S. units. Surface Preparation: All surfaces should be clean and free from dirt and oil and sanded as per instructions above. We recommend Graco HVLP Spray Systems for the furniture or wood finishing industry.Spray Application of General Finishes Water Based Finishes Using HVLP Spray EquipmentWater Based top coats are ready to spray from the container. If necessary in hot or dry climates, reduce 10 to 20% with water or General Finishes Extender to extend the open time.Pre-Sealing: Softwoods such as Pine and Aspen absorb stain at an uneven rate and may respond better to staining if the wood has been pre-sealed. Natural stain can be applied to raw wood to condition the surface for uniform penetration of the stain. Pre-sealing will cause the final stain to be lighter. Always test your colour on a hidden part of the furniture! Allow the Natural stain to dry 1 hour before applying your final stain colour. If you are using a sprayer that has been used for oil based or lacquers, clean the unit thoroughly and rinse with warm water before using. Apply a thin coat first that will dry and harden faster. Sand this first coat down to a smooth base on which to build your finish coats. With water-based finishes, it is better to spray 2 thin coats rather than 1 heavy coat.Recommended Spray Tips for Wood Stains and Top Coats. Fluid tip sizes for HVLP should be as follows:  - Dye Stains 1.1mm - Wood Stains 1.1mm to 1.3mm - Top Coats 1.1mm to 1.3mm - Milk Paint  1.8mm Contact your supplier to verify proper tip sizes for your specific equipment.  Always strain material through a medium to fine mesh filter before spraying.Spray medium wet films at 3-5 wet ml thickness.Reduction: If spraying the product as a stain in order to allow the grain to show through, reduce 10 to 20% with water or General Finishes Extender. If spraying as a paint, do not reduce. For example, you may wish to spray Rosewood stain on for a painted look. In this instance, do not reduce. It is generally not necessary to reduce Milk Paints. but they also may be reduced 10 to 20% with water or GF Extender.Practice makes perfect! If you have never sprayed finishes before, take a large piece of cardboard and practice your technique first. Spray water on the cardboard to learn how the gun works. Check your fluid settings and adjust the controls to get comfortable with the spray angles and to develop your technique.Keep your gun at a 90* angle, 15 - 20cm from the surface. On large flat areas, use wet, even patterns 15 - 20cm wide. Overlap each pass 25% to conceal lines. For narrow surfaces, reduce the fan pattern to 5 - 7cm to reduce overspray. Break your work into sections such as dresser top or drawer fronts. Spraying too large of an area can result in a textured grainy surface. A correctly sprayed finish should appear even and glossy. It is important to spray enough material to allow proper flow and levellin...

GF Stain Blocker Launched

roy 30/06/2017 0
Stain Blocker is GF's NEW water based white primer. GFSB can be used to protect pigmented finishes from stain, dye and wood tannin bleed-through. Use over an existing finish, raw wood, or MDF as a base coat for GF Milk Paints, Chalk Style Paints, & Pigmented Polys.GF Stain Blocker is designed for effectiveness, not price point. A successful primer requires a sophisticated resin system and an atypical formulation, which will result in a more expensive product. To maximize GFSB's effectiveness, our chemists formulated this product with the highest quality ingredients. Use ONLY for those pieces where you will really care if there is bleed through. GFSB will work every time, not some of the time....

Water-based Finishing Techniques

Water-based Finishing Techniques

roy 29/06/2017 0
In the words of Monty Python.. ”forget everything you know”. The set of rules for oil base finishes are not the same when using water base finishes. Modern water-based finishes give excellent results, but when applying they are less forgiving than solvent finishes, so you have to be more precise in your preparation and techniques. If you continue to do everything exactly the same as when applying solvent finishes, you could end up in trouble. Here are some tips.Spray appliedWhen storing, do not allow to freezeTemperature important when spraying (min temperature is 18°C)Filtering importantImportant to apply thin coats, especially first coat/sealing coatScuff sanding and time interval between applying coats is important so good adhesion occurs between coats. When applying low sheens (matt and satin) first coat with a sealer or gloss to prevent a cloudy effect. When applying on top of an oil or solvent based stain allow a minimum of 24-48 hours before applying WB finish.Brush appliedWhen storing, do not allow to freezeApply a coat as a sealer. Sometimes a separate sealer is available, however usually waterborne coatings are self sealing.High quality brushes generally give the best results. If using a foam brush and bubbles appear, take a second brush slightly dampened with water to remove bubbles in the finish. It is best work at room temperature. Check with the manufacturer for drying times on each product. Also remember that dying between coats is significantly affected by temperature and humidity.Sand the seal coat after it dries. All water-based products raise the grain to some degree. A good sanding of the first coat will eliminate the problem of a rough finish for subsequent coats.Do not finish beyond 4 mils thickness. If you plan to sand and rub the finish, wait a few days for full drying to take place.Do not attempt to conduct adhesion tests for about a week after application.By making some small changes you will get excellent results....
